Good pond aeration is essential to maintaining a healthy pond environment. Aerators can be operating all year round. In the summer they help ensure that oxygen levels in the pond are kept at a safe level. During the winter in cold climates an aerator can help keep a section of the pond surface from freezing, which in turn allows toxic gases to escape the pond.
