This low-power floating pond deicer is designed to maintain a small, consistent opening in pond ice during winter. By keeping an area of water ice-free, it allows harmful gases to escape and oxygen to enter, which is critical for fish survival in cold climates.
Instead of heating the entire pond, this unit focuses on efficiency, using minimal electricity while operating only when needed. Its thermostatic control ensures the heating element never becomes hot to the touch when submerged, making it safe for fish, pond liners, and plastic ponds.
Why Choose K&H Thermo-Pond 3.0 Pond Deicer?
-
Ultra Low Power: Operates at just 100 watts, costing only pennies per day to run.
-
Targeted Ice Control: Maintains a 12 inch opening for effective gas exchange without warming the full pond.
-
Automatic Operation: Built-in thermostat cycles the unit on and off as conditions require.
-
Fish Safe Design: Will not overheat water or damage liners, even if fish contact the unit.
-
Cold Climate Tested: Proven performance in sub-zero winter conditions.
Winter Use and Safety Notes
This deicer is intended to keep water just above freezing and is not adjustable to higher temperatures. Foam formation around the unit during operation is normal and harmless, caused by temperature differences in the water. The heating element must remain submerged in water at all times during operation.
Care and Installation Guidelines
- Use only in ponds with a minimum depth of 18 inches.
- If ice exceeds 2 inches, drill a hole using an ice auger before placement.
- Never chop through ice, as shock waves can harm fish.
- Remove snow and ice buildup from the top of the unit.
- Plug into a properly grounded outlet and avoid permanent extension cord use.
PRO TIP
Clean leaves and organic debris from the pond before freeze-up. Even with an ice opening, excess decaying material can reduce oxygen levels and stress fish through winter.
